Wolff Set to Divest Shareholding Valuing Mercedes F1 at £4.6 Billion

Team Principal Wolff has guided Mercedes to historic success in F1

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is engaged in final negotiations to sell a portion of his ownership stake in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

This transaction estimates Mercedes at £4.6 billion – a record for an F1 team – following McLaren was appraised at £3.5bn in an adjustment to ownership structure in September.

The Austrian executive, who owns a 33% stake of Mercedes F1, would sell a stake in the region of five percent.

The 53-year-old would stay on as team boss and chief executive officer should the deal proceed.

Shareholder Breakdown

Remaining partners in Mercedes F1 are Mercedes and chemicals giant Ineos Group, who each also own a third of the company.

A Mercedes spokesperson stated: "We will be making no official statement on the matter. The governance of the team will remain unaltered, and all three partners are fully committed to the ongoing success of Mercedes-Benz in Formula One."

Financial Growth

The deal would represent a significant increase in worth of Mercedes F1 since Ineos bought its stake for £208m in 2022.

This surge reflects the growth in valuations of F1 teams recently due to the increasing appeal of Formula 1 globally.

This was also seen in the success of the Formula 1 film featuring Brad Pitt, which debuted last summer and has grossed over $630m (£458 million) at the box office.

It is Pitt's most successful film and the most successful sports film to date.

Current Performance

Mercedes are runner-up in the team standings, behind McLaren, with three races remaining this season.

Their lead driver British driver George Russell has secured victory in 2 of the 21 races this year and is fourth in the individual standings after McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.

Mercedes won a record eight consecutive constructors' championships and seven driver championships, six for Lewis Hamilton and one by Nico Rosberg, from 2014 to 2021.
