One Piece Concludes a 27-Year Era in 2026

It's the end of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation revealing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and included dozens of non-canon storylines. Commencing in the new year, after the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the anime will go on a three-month break until April, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.

Updated Production Plan

From now on, the series will release two seasons every year for a cap of 26 episodes. The studio explains this will enable the anime to “explore further into the heart of the universe — incorporating more content, rhythm, and timing of the source material.” Yet, Toei conclude by hinting at “exciting surprises” during the series' break, which means additional One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut during this gap.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime previously took a six-month break that began in October 2024 and ended in early 2025. The intermission was for the animators to enhance the visuals and let the comic to build a lead to avoid a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The show greatly benefited from this respite, and it has been able to deliver fans with countless fight scenes, superior graphics, and less filler than ever before.

Embracing Seasonal Format

Although a few summary installments appeared during the recent run, the positive effects of this updated approach greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the action. This additionally allows the original work, which is presently in the thick of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the adaptation. Per the announcement, this may lead to a single installment of the series adapting a single manga chapter, with some alternatively handling one and a half chapters or more to compensate for time.

It's the end of a generation for anime, as One Piece is the last big series to abandon the old-school way of production, which focused on being on air for most of the calendar. It's the reason why iconic series such as Naruto, and of course One Piece have so many filler arcs, and the standard of the animation can vary widely between one episode and the next. Today, anime production is organized in cours, with a couple at most coming out each year, enabling improved visuals and more faithfulness to the original work.
