Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several entry passages leading to the depot... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as Daesh - established extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This operation underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.

UK warplanes have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," he said. "They were part of a great many UK service members on duty over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."

In December, the US military carried out what it termed a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in the country, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Daesh still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
