Colombian President Says 'I Would Resort to Weapons Once More' if United States Intervenes Militarily.

President Trump along with his Colombian counterpart have turned up the rhetoric in their verbal conflict, heightening strains bilaterally following American military units struck Venezuela in an operation to oust President Nicolás Maduro from power.

"He has narcotics facilities and production sites and that won't last much longer," Trump added.

Rising Tensions coupled with Claims

Addressing the press over the weekend, the US president threatened analogous use of force against Colombia, stating Colombia faces serious problems and led by an unwell individual who enjoys creating the drug and selling it to the United States."

Although Colombia remains the world’s largest cocaine-producing country, authorities have found no indication implicating Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is directly tied to the business.

A Deteriorating Alliance

This nation has long been a staunch collaborator of the United States in the fight against drug trafficking and received bipartisan support from American politicians, but relations have deteriorated markedly since Trump came to office.

Its illicit drug economy is predominantly run by guerrilla factions such as the Clan del Golfo, the ELN guerrilla group and breakaway groups of the demobilized Farc, the majority of whose members laid down arms after a landmark accord.

Colombia's Strong Response

Upon being questioned if military intervention similar to Venezuela was on the cards against his country, Trump replied: "I like the sound of that to me personally."

The Colombian leader, a former leftist guerrilla who disarmed decades ago, categorically refuted these allegations. "I am no illegitimate and I am not a drug trafficker," he declared.

"Trump speaks without information. Stop slandering me," he expressed in a message.

"Should American forces attack civilians, they will transform into a multitude of fighters across the countryside. And should they arrest me, whom many of the country holds in high esteem, they will unleash the fierce spirit of the nation," he admonished.

From Insurgent to Leader

Petro spent a period in his early life as a member with the radical M-19 guerrilla group though it is believed to have ever participated in combat. Following his disarmament, he participated in drafting the constitutional rewrite over three decades ago subsequently becoming a prominent senator. He held the office of mayor of the Colombian capital before being elected the nation's highest office.

"I swore not to touch a weapon again ... but for Colombia I shall resume arms again," he affirmed.

Heightened Measures and Cross-Political Opposition

The Colombian defence minister announced that the president’s protection team had been reinforced.

A segment of Colombia’s right wing opposition have expressed support with Trump, yet figures spanning the ideological divide have condemned the notion of a US attack targeting Colombia.

Bilateral and Financial Strains

American authorities cancelled Petro’s visa subsequent to he called on US military personnel to ignore unlawful commands. Months later, the US enacted asset freezes against the president, his spouse and a number of associates.

Simultaneously as the US increased its forces in the Caribbean and targeting alleged narcotics traffickers to pressure Venezuela’s Maduro, the US executed strikes on boats in the eastern Pacific region adjacent to Colombia.
