The feeling at Lazio's home ground was far from happy during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a team that had conceded 10 goals while netting just two in their last five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were concluding their ongoing dissent in a continuous dispute with president Claudio Lotito.
The Campaign Unraveling?
Was the team's progress coming unstitched, or did there exist a binding element holding it together to start with? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as head coach during the off-season, before he to later acknowledge that the management had not mentioned the transfer ban they were facing for accounting issues. Reports that he could resign were unfounded, but he stated that Lotito had "misled" him.
Lazio became as messy on the pitch as off the field, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in their other opening fixtures, including the Rome derby. Throughout this period, it's been difficult to ascertain if they're getting better or self-destructing.
Cancellieri's Unexpected Comeback
One individual continued to smile through it. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to feature for Lazio during this campaign. He was on the last one with Parma on loan and, at the start of the off-season, his parent club were advocating for him to extend his stay a while longer. The registration embargo forced a rethink. They were unable to thin their squad with no new signings.
He signed in the first place during Sarri's previous tenure, back then just 20 years old product of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 league appearances with the club in the 2022-23 season, almost all of those from the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who left at the end of that season, subsequently claimed Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri would be a star then never playing him."
Finding His True Position
Perhaps the manager was still trying to work out the exact type of Cancellieri's abilities. Billed as an attacking winger when he joined, Cancellieri instead found himself the majority of that term as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile at No 9. During 63 outings on loan at Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
