A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” declared the national leader.
The president reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's economic vision for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The building of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its role in public projects. They were built at an accelerated rate, beating forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an prompt suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This pause was requested while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."
In response, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and management of these national undertakings.
