Activist Collective Asserts to Have Extracted Countless of Audio Files from Spotify

An activist group has stated to have harvested a vast number of tracks from the popular streaming service and is preparing to release them publicly.

Potential Boost for AI Training

Industry experts said the apparent leak could aid AI companies looking for material to develop their technology.

A group called Anna’s Archive said it had obtained 86 million audio tracks from the platform and 256 million rows of associated data such as performer and album names. The company, which carries more than 100 million songs, confirmed that the breach did not constitute its entire catalog.

“We have identified and disabled the malicious user accounts that engaged in unlawful scraping,” said a Spotify spokesperson.

The Stockholm-based service, which has more than 700 million subscribers worldwide, further explained that an investigation into unauthorized access found a external actor scraped public metadata and used illicit tactics to circumvent DRM [digital rights management].

Archive's Declared Mission and Worries

The streaming service does not believe the music taken by Anna’s Archive has been released yet. Anna’s Archive, which is known for providing links to pirated books, said in a blog it wanted to create a ‘historical repository’ for music.

The group claimed the music files represented 99.6% of all music streamed to by its listeners and would be distributed via ‘peer-to-peer networks’, a method of exchanging large digital files online.

“Naturally Spotify doesn’t have all the music in the world, but it’s a great start,” said Anna’s Archive, which frames its purpose as “preserving humanity’s knowledge and heritage”.

Model Development and Intellectual Property Debate

Ed Newton-Rex for protecting artists’ rights, remarked the leaked music would probably be used for training artificial intelligence systems.

“Training on illegally sourced material is sadly common in the AI industry, so this stolen music is highly likely to be used instructing AI models,” he stated.

The Anna’s Archive site makes references to a large online archive, a huge online archive of copyrighted books that has allegedly been leveraged by Meta to train its systems.

A founder of an artificial intelligence company posted on the professional network that members of the public could in theory “build their own personal free equivalent of the service”. The executive said it could also allow technology firms to “educate models on contemporary music at a large volume”.

Intellectual property law has become a battleground between creatives, authors and content creators on one side and tech giants on the other.

Policy Proposals and Reactions

Across Britain, creative professionals have protested against a government proposal to let AI companies use protected work without permission unless the rights holder opts out. Virtually every respondent to a government consultation on the proposal has supported artists’ apprehensions.

The secretary of state for technology, innovation and development told parliament this month there was “little consensus” on the issue, adding that ministers would “take the time to get this right”. The administration has committed to make policy proposals on AI and copyright by March 2025.
